REI is a national outdoor specialty retailer and the nation’s largest consumer co-op with 6 million active members. In addition to its own line of high-quality award-winning gear and apparel, REI offers products from the top brands for camping, climbing, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling, snow sports and travel.
While anyone may join or shop at REI, members pay a one-time $20 membership fee, receive voting privileges to elect REI’s board of directors and share in the co-op’s profits through an annual member refund based on their purchases.
REI, a passionate advocate for the outdoors, is committed to creating access to inspiring outdoor places across the country. With 12,000 employees – who are knowledgeable and experienced outdoor enthusiasts – REI has been recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” for 19 consecutive years.
Core Purpose: To inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventures and stewardship.
We believe that an outdoor life is a life well lived. That’s our passion and our worldview: “We believe success demands changing how limited natural resources are used and expanding access to inspirational places.” Those statements put sustainability squarely at the heart of REI.
We connect people to the outdoors by offering the best gear and expertise for all kinds of adventures and we talk about stewardship because our co-op depends on keeping outdoor spaces accessible and well-taken care of for generations to come.
Every year, we measure our progress towards operating a sustainable business through our annual Stewardship Report, which tracks our efforts to ensure that people everywhere have a deep connection to natural, inspiring places. We want to share what we are doing so that our members, customers, communities and employees feel part of our efforts to inspire a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.
We invite you to read our report. It outlines the co-op's highlights and challenges for every year since 2006. The 2015 report is structured into four sections, which reflect our areas of strategic focus: Curate Sustainable Products, Create Access, Catalyze Experiences and Core Practices.
